Episcopal Day at the OKC RedHawks

We went out to the ballpark;
We all had a great time.
Bishop Ed threw the first pitch of the game
Now he's going in the Hall of Fame.
We had hot dogs, peanuts, and pizza,
We stood and cheered on our team.
So let's plan
to
do it again
This time, next Spring!

Students Step-up Operation Green at
St. Mary's Episcopal School
A group of concerned students at St. Mary's Episcopal School decided it was not enough to just recycle paper, which the school has done for quite some time. Operation Green, a student-created and student-run recycling club, under the direction of science teacher Tricia Brown, has expanded the program to include plastics and aluminum. And to take it one step further, the students also compost lunch waste and campus landscaping refuse, all of which is used as fertilizer for the outdoor classroom and campus garden beds.
Foreground: Sahanya Bhaktaram, Background: Emily Tompkins (both 4th graders)
Operation Green, open to third through fifth graders, began with the goal of improving the community and the environment in order to create a healthier, safer place to teach, learn and worship. The club approached the challenge systematically and scientifically, identifying what the school needed to recycle, as well as what they were able to recycle. The whole process began with a waste stream analysis, or commonly known as "dumpster-diving" to identify what types and what quantity of recyclable waste was being produced at the school. The Operation Green team then worked to obtain monetary donations, educate their school on recycling, and implement the program.
When asked why Operation Green is important, student Sarah McLain said, "What we're doing is important because it teaches my young generation about how and why we should help the Earth."
Left to right: Anna Hall, Nathan Goins, Tara Ramakrishnan, Chloe Duit, Gabi Bozarth
For fifth grade students, the program also combines their science, math and technology skills to calculate and graph the volume of waste that is being diverted from landfills.
St. Mary's Episcopal School, established in 1977, strives to create quality learning experiences in a nurturing environment that promotes academic excellence, spiritual development, and community responsibility. St. Mary's serves pre-school aged children through fifth grade and is adding sixth through eighth grade over the next three years. The School admits students of any faith, race, color, national and ethnic origin, and extends all the rights, privileges, programs and activities to its students and does not discriminate in any of its educational, admission or financial aid policies and programs. A 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, St. Mary's mission is to "provide quality academic programs in an environment fostering respect for faith, family, others and self." Godly Play Training to be Offered
You asked and we listened. We are offering a three-day Godly Play Core Training event at St. Paul's Cathedral, 127 NW 7th Street, Oklahoma City. Classes will be offered on:
Thursday, June 9th from 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m.
Friday, June 10th from 8:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m.
Saturday, June 11th from 8:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m.
Godly Play is an approach to religious education in which the teacher shows the various ways to use the sacred stories, parables and liturgical actions of the Christian faith as tools for approaching the larger questions of life. These components of religious language become the starting points for wonder and discussion. Following the Montessori tradition, the materials are always available for children to use in retelling the story, thus helping them to truly make the stories their own. Class structure follows the pattern of worship. There is time to share the story in community and time to respond individually (through art materials or the story manipulatives). At the end of the response time, the community of children comes together for prayers and a "feast." This method was begun by the Rev. Jerome Berryman, an Episcopal priest, who studied with Sofia Cavalletti, who pioneered the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd program.
The cost for training is $295. However, don't let this be an impediment in your taking the training. Many smaller congregations have asked about this and we want you to be able to attend. Contact Sabrina if you need scholarship help. Additionally, we will help you look at alternative materials that help reduce the set- up costs. A registration form an brochure is on line.
You may check out Godly Play on their web site: http://www.godlyplayfoundation.org/newsite/Main.php

New Hope Sunday is June 5

New Hope is a non-profit organization that works with children who have a parent in prison. A 2010 Oklahoma study found that children who have a parent in prison are five times more likely to end up in prison themselves than are their peers. New Hope wants to stop that cycle, and one way we do that is through our summer camps. This year New Hope is anticipating that up to 150 Oklahoma children ages 8-18 will attend 7 sessions of residential summer camps. Anything you can donate will help, but please consider if you can donate a room-and-board scholarship of $200 or a full scholarship of $800. You can donate on-line at our website, http://www.newhopeoklahoma.org, or you can mail a donation to New Hope, 10901 South Yale, Tulsa, OK 74137-7211. Please contact Executive Director, the Rev. Judy Gann, at judy@newhopeoklahoma.org if you have questions or if you have an interest in volunteering this summer. |

The Alleluia Fund
GOD IS A GIVER.... THEREFORE WE ARE GIVERS
We are made in the image of God. He is generous, therefore we are generous. When we are giving, we are reflecting the likeness of God. It is our basic nature to give of ourselves.
THE ALLELUIA FUND is a diocesan-wide offering. It's purpose is to empower our diocese to respond to God's call to build the church by creating new resources for mission and ministry, and to encourage every member of our Diocese to live more fully into his/her baptismal covenant. The Alleluia Fund will be celebrated June 5th. Contributions can be made through your home church or sent to The Episcopal Diocese of Oklahoma, 924 North Robinson, Oklahoma City, OK 73102

Closing - Prayer for May
Lord God our Father, through our Saviour Jesus Christ you have assured your children of eternal life and in baptism have made us one with him: deliver us from the death of sin and raise us to new life in your love, in the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, by the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
